Kagando Christian Hospital was established in 1965, and is part of the Kagando Rural Development Centre, which is a ministry arm of the Diocese of South Rwenzori. It has 200 beds with seven wards:
There is also a community based health care project which was set up following a cholera outbreak in 1978.
The hospital treats around 30,000 outpatients and 17,000 inpatients each year. Its staff consist of 2 surgeons, 2 physicians, an anaesthetist and a physiotherapist.
As the local hospital staff are relatively few in number, the hospital would like to expand its accommodation block so that doctors, nurses and other volunteers from overseas can work there. This year's harvest appeal will help double the size of this block from four to eight rooms.
Kagando hospital is regularly chosen by medical students as a place where they may volunteer to offer their 'elective' - part of their training which involves work overseas. Click on these links for more information:
