The "Young and Powerful" initiative of the Diocese of South Rwenzori has been set up in order to increase opportunities for young people to learn about personal health care and to gain training and education. It focuses especially on disadvantaged and vulnerable groups. Around 69,000 adolescents have so far benefited from various aspects of the initiative.
The Kamaiba Youth Centre in the district of Kasese aims to equip young people with skills such as tailoring, catering, computer and office skills, music and drama, and various crafts. The Centre also accommodates a health education programme for young people, and provides space for seminars, conferences and retreats.
The Centre now wishes to provide hostel accommodation so that children can come from outlying areas for residential courses, typically for periods of 3 – 5 months. The cost of one hostel, which will accommodate 28 people, is around £20,000.
Canon Semu Baluku, Mission Co-ordinator for the Diocese of South Rwenzori, has said, “Your support will help us pour the concrete floor slab and start raising the walls. It will enable us to make a big push on the first of the two hostel blocks which are planned so far. ”
The Deanery of Glossop, in North West Derbyshire, has a link with the Diocese of South Rwenzori, and has recommended that this year's harvest appeal support projects recommended by the Bishop of that Diocese, the Rt Revd Jackson Nzerebende Tembo. Bishop Jackson intends to visit Derbyshire later this year.
